Mindfulness and MBSR
Why consider training in mindfulness and meditation?
Within every person, without exception, there is a vast reservoir of strength and wisdom. It is a space of refuge, healing, clarity and renewal. The more stressed and distracted we become, the more difficult it is to find our way there. The ancient wisdom practices of meditation and mindfulness provide practical tools for calming the chaotic mind. Simple, but not easy, this training is like any kind of exercise, requiring a skillful coach, proven programs and lots of practice. The muscles of mindfulness and awareness need to be built up. Optimal results depend on optimal training. When the mind is clear, we can respond instead of react mindlessly. The magic of mindfulness is first learning how to calm the mind, and finally training the mind to do that naturally.
What is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)?
MBSR is an 8 week program consisting of systematic training in mindfulness meditation, yoga and inquiry that facilitates participants in learning how to practice, integrate and apply mindfulness in their daily life. Established in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues at UMass Medical Center, MBSR has been taught world wide and extensively researched. It is evidence based to have positive outcomes for increasing wellbeing, reducing symptoms of stress, as well as benefiting individuals suffering from chronic conditions, such as stress, pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, fatigue, multiple sclerosis, cancer, hypertension, fibromyalgia and menopause.
